Overview

Your gut microbiome — the 38 trillion microorganisms inhabiting your gastrointestinal tract — is increasingly recognized as a central regulator of health that extends far beyond digestion. The gut-brain axis, the gut-immune axis, and the gut-metabolic axis are no longer theoretical constructs; they are well-documented bidirectional communication pathways that influence everything from mood and cognitive function to immune regulation, inflammation, and metabolic health.

The research is promising but early. Population studies have linked lower microbial diversity with obesity, type 2 diabetes and inflammatory conditions, and links with mood and brain health are an active area of study. The microbiome also responds quickly to what you eat: in a controlled study, switching between plant-based and animal-based diets changed gut bacteria within days (David LA et al., Nature, 2014). What most studies cannot yet show is cause and effect, that is, whether changing your microbiome changes your risk of disease.

Our Gut Microbiome Analysis uses next-generation sequencing (16S rRNA or shotgun metagenomic sequencing) on a stool sample to map your gut bacterial ecosystem. The analysis provides: microbial diversity index (alpha diversity — higher diversity is consistently associated with better health outcomes), relative abundance of key bacterial phyla and species, detection of potentially pathogenic organisms, markers of intestinal inflammation (calprotectin, zonulin), short-chain fatty acid production capacity (butyrate, propionate, acetate — critical for gut barrier integrity and immune regulation), and functional pathway analysis (what your microbiome is doing, not just what is present).

Why does this matter for longevity? Some studies of very long-lived people have reported distinct microbiome profiles, but the findings vary between populations and do not yet tell us what to change. What is clear is that the microbiome is modifiable through diet, fibre, fermented foods and lifestyle, and in some cases through targeted treatment when a specific problem is found.

At Genoryx, your microbiome results are interpreted by a physician who integrates them with your biomarker panel, hormonal data, and clinical symptoms. We do not just hand you a colorful report of bacterial names — we translate the data into an actionable gut optimization strategy. Book a consultation with our longevity physician to discuss whether microbiome analysis is appropriate for your health goals.

What the evidence says

Evidence · Emerging

Plausible biology and early human data. We tell you what is and is not known. How we grade evidence

What it shows

The gut microbiome is linked to metabolism, inflammation and several chronic diseases, and diet changes it.

What it does not show

Most links are associations. A stool report does not diagnose disease, and it cannot yet predict which change will work for you, which is why we retest.

What it can and cannot do

What it can do

  • Identify which bacteria are in a stool sample, and in what balance.
  • Add information blood tests do not give, read alongside your symptoms.

What it cannot do

  • Diagnose disease. Most microbiome links are associations, not proven causes.Source [1]
  • Predict which change will work for you, which is why we retest.
  • Give an accurate baseline within 4 to 6 weeks of antibiotics.

Numbers in brackets point to the studies above. Medical review: a physician who did not write this page checks each line against the source it cites, and checks that nothing reads as a promised result. How we review

Who it's for

A good fit

  • Adults with ongoing bloating or irregular bowel habits, alongside a physician’s work-up
  • Adults who want a baseline to retest against after changing their diet
  • People who understand that a stool report shows associations, not a diagnosis

Talk to us first

  • Recent antibiotic use (wait 4-6 weeks for accurate baseline)
  • Active gastrointestinal infection (test may reflect acute rather than baseline state)

Blood markers read alongside your report

Persistent gut symptoms are checked conventionally first. These results help separate gut problems from other causes.

Before your appointment

  • Wait 4 to 6 weeks after antibiotics before collecting the sample.
  • Do not test during an active stomach infection; the result would reflect the infection.
  • You collect the sample at home with the kit and instructions provided.
  • Time to allow: stool sample collection (at home), then 60-minute physician results consultation (2-4 weeks after submission).

Your physician confirms at screening whether this is right for you. If anything above applies, tell us when you book.

What happens on the day

  1. 01

    Consultation

Symptoms, diet, medicines and recent antibiotics are reviewed.

  2. 02

    Sample

A stool sample is collected at home using the kit and instructions provided.

  3. 03

    Physician review

Your sequencing report is explained in plain language, with what it does and does not show.

  4. 04

    Plan and retest

Diet and targeted support, then a retest to confirm the change: baseline + follow-up at 3-6 months post-intervention.

Equipment and method

  • 01Next-generation 16S rRNA gene sequencing
  • 02Shotgun metagenomic sequencing (advanced tier)
  • 03Calprotectin and zonulin inflammatory markers
  • 04Short-chain fatty acid functional analysis
  • 05Bioinformatic analysis with clinical interpretation

Physician oversight

Every microbiome report is reviewed with you by a physician. Any intervention is staged and retested, and persistent or red-flag symptoms are investigated conventionally first.

Questions people ask

What does a gut microbiome test reveal?

The test maps your gut bacterial ecosystem — which species are present, their relative abundance, your overall microbial diversity, inflammatory markers, gut barrier integrity indicators, and functional capacity (what your bacteria are producing). Results are interpreted by a physician in the context of your symptoms and health goals.

Is gut microbiome testing worth it?

If you have chronic digestive issues, unexplained fatigue, autoimmune conditions, mood disorders, or are pursuing comprehensive health optimization, microbiome testing can add information that blood tests do not provide. It is most useful alongside symptoms and other results. The science linking specific microbiome profiles to health outcomes is still developing, and your physician will tell you which findings are actionable and which are not.

How can I improve my gut microbiome?

Dietary diversity is one of the most important modifiable factors; in large population studies, eating a wider variety of plants each week is associated with higher microbial diversity. Fermented foods, adequate fiber, regular exercise, quality sleep, and stress management all positively influence the microbiome. Your physician will provide a personalized protocol based on your test results.
