Waking tired, wired at night

Sleep that doesn’t restore you.

Sleep problems are partly a blood question and partly not. A few measurable causes sit in a panel. Others, like sleep apnoea, need a sleep study. Knowing which is which saves time.

In Indian context

Why it is worth a closer look.

  • Restless legs, which keep many people awake, are linked to iron deficiency, and blood tests look for it.1
  • Sleep apnoea is diagnosed with a sleep study. Loud snoring is common in it, though not everyone who snores has it.2

What we look at

The markers, and why each one.

Which tests

Where those numbers come from.

What a physician does with it

A physician asks about snoring, waking, restless legs, caffeine, screens and shift work before ordering anything. If your history points to sleep apnoea, you are referred for a sleep study, which we do not run in clinic.

The evidence, honestly

What testing can show, and what it can’t.

What the evidence supports

  • Checking iron is reasonable when restless legs keep you awake.1
  • A thyroid test is a standard part of looking at tiredness and poor sleep.3,4

What it does not support

  • No blood test diagnoses sleep apnoea or insomnia.2
  • A single cortisol reading cannot tell you that stress is the cause of poor sleep.
  • A wearable’s sleep score is not a diagnosis. It can be a useful prompt to ask the question.

General education, not advice for you. What suits you depends on your results and history, and a physician decides it with you.

Questions people ask.

Do you do sleep studies?

No. If your history suggests sleep apnoea, a physician refers you for a sleep study, which is the test that diagnoses it.

Can a blood test explain my insomnia?

Sometimes it finds a contributor, such as low iron behind restless legs or a thyroid problem. Often it does not, and that is useful to know too.

Should I bring my wearable data?

Yes. Sleep and heart-rate trends help the conversation, as long as everyone treats them as prompts rather than diagnoses.
