The KIHD study followed 2,315 Finnish men for over 20 years. Men who used a sauna 4-7 times per week had a 63% reduction in sudden cardiac death, 40% reduction in all-cause mortality, 66% reduction in dementia risk, and 65% reduction in Alzheimer's disease risk.
These effect sizes are comparable to regular exercise and statin therapy.
Both achieve the primary therapeutic effect — raising core body temperature by 1-2 degrees Celsius. Infrared saunas operate at lower ambient temperatures (45-60°C) while achieving comparable core heating.
Heart rate increases to 100-150 bpm, blood vessels dilate improving endothelial function, blood pressure drops, and arterial compliance improves.
HSPs repair misfolded proteins, prevent aggregation, reduce insulin resistance, and protect against neurodegenerative protein aggregation.
Sweat does contain measurable heavy metals, but the cardiovascular, hormetic, and anti-inflammatory benefits are far more clinically significant than any detoxification effect.
Frequency: 4-7 sessions per week. Duration: 15-20 min at 80-100°C (traditional) or 30-40 min at 50-60°C (infrared). Stay hydrated with electrolytes.
