Eosinophil count Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC)
The actual number of allergy cells, not just their share.
Also printed asAEC · Abs Eosinophils · Eosinophils Absolute
What it measures
The real number of allergy and parasite cells you have.
The number used to grade allergy and to decide whether a parasite is worth treating; the percentage is not.
Why it matters for how long you stay well
A persistently high count is a prompt to find the cause, because years of untreated allergy or untreated worms cost sleep, iron and energy.
How it shows up in daily life
It rises with allergy, asthma, eczema and intestinal worms, and it is the number worth acting on.
High and low readings
When it reads high
Allergy, asthma or a parasite.
When it reads low
Low is fine.
What moves it
Daily life
- hay fever, asthma and skin allergy
- intestinal worms
- season and pollen
- certain foods
Medicines known to shift it
- steroids (lower it)
Listed so a result can be read in context. It is not advice to start, stop or change any medicine; that decision belongs with your physician.
Read it with
Markers that move this one, or that this one moves. One number read alone can mislead.
- Eosinophil shareKnown mechanism
Eosinophil share pushes it up
The absolute count is the eosinophil share multiplied by the total white cell count. Only the count has thresholds attached to it.
- Total IgE, the allergy antibodyObserved association
Total IgE moves with it
The allergy antibody and the allergy cell rise together in allergy, asthma and worm infection. Seeing both raised makes an allergic cause much more likely than either alone.
Common questions
What does Absolute Eosinophil Count measure?
The real number of allergy and parasite cells you have. The number used to grade allergy and to decide whether a parasite is worth treating; the percentage is not.
What does a high Eosinophil count result usually mean?
Allergy, asthma or a parasite.
What does a low Eosinophil count result usually mean?
Low is fine.
What is the usual reference range for Eosinophil count?
A broad adult reference band is below 500 /mm³. Labs differ, so read your result against the band printed on your own report.
Educational only, not a diagnosis. A single number means little without your history and the rest of your panel, so discuss your own results with your physician.
Typical adult reference band
- Adults
- below 500 /mm³
Labs differ. The band printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.
Reported in /mm³, cells/µL
Ageing relevance
1/5
A general health marker with limited direct ageing data.
Worth knowing
It is the eosinophil share multiplied by the total white-cell count.
