Albumin–globulin balance A/G Ratio
Your albumin divided by the rest of your blood protein.
Also printed asAlbumin/Globulin Ratio · A:G Ratio · AG Ratio · Albumin Globulin Ratio
What it measures
Liver-made protein divided by immune-made protein.
Falls when the liver makes less albumin or the immune system makes more antibodies, so it catches both at once.
Why it matters for how long you stay well
Labs report a typical range by convention rather than from any guideline, so a persistently low ratio is a prompt to look at albumin and total protein properly, not a finding in itself.
How it shows up in daily life
It is arithmetic on two results you already have, not another test on your sample.
High and low readings
When it reads high
Usually low globulin rather than a problem.
When it reads low
Either less albumin or more antibody; read it with the liver enzymes and inflammation markers.
What moves it
Daily life
- everything that moves albumin or globulin
Read it with
Markers that move this one, or that this one moves. One number read alone can mislead.
- AlbuminKnown mechanism
Albumin pushes it up
This balance divides albumin by the rest of your blood protein. It is arithmetic on two results you already have, so read those two instead.
- GlobulinKnown mechanism
Globulin pulls it down
Globulin sits at the bottom of that fraction. More antibody protein narrows the balance even when your albumin has not moved at all.
Common questions
What does A/G Ratio measure?
Liver-made protein divided by immune-made protein. Falls when the liver makes less albumin or the immune system makes more antibodies, so it catches both at once.
What does a high Albumin–globulin balance result usually mean?
Usually low globulin rather than a problem.
What does a low Albumin–globulin balance result usually mean?
Either less albumin or more antibody; read it with the liver enzymes and inflammation markers.
What is the usual reference range for Albumin–globulin balance?
A broad adult reference band is 1–2.5. Labs differ, so read your result against the band printed on your own report.
Educational only, not a diagnosis. A single number means little without your history and the rest of your panel, so discuss your own results with your physician.
Typical adult reference band
- Adults
- 1–2.5
Labs differ. The band printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.
