Ask anyone living in Hyderabad about water quality, and the first thing they will mention is their hair. Hard water — water with high concentrations of dissolved calcium and magnesium — is infamous for leaving hair dry, brittle, and lifeless. But the health implications of hard water extend far beyond cosmetic concerns, and in a city where water hardness frequently exceeds 300 mg/L (well above the WHO's recommended 200 mg/L), this is a public health conversation worth having.
Water hardness is determined by the concentration of dissolved calcium carbonate and magnesium. As groundwater in the Hyderabad region percolates through the Deccan Plateau's granite and limestone formations, it picks up high concentrations of these minerals. The result is water that registers as "very hard" to "extremely hard" on standard classifications.
A 2019 survey by the Central Ground Water Board found that several zones in Hyderabad — particularly in Kukatpally, Miyapur, LB Nagar, and parts of Secunderabad — had water hardness levels exceeding 500 mg/L.
Kidney stones: The relationship between hard water consumption and kidney stone formation is well-documented. A 2015 review in Environmental Geochemistry and Health found a positive association between water hardness and the incidence of calcium-based kidney stones. Hyderabad's nephrologists frequently note the high prevalence of stone disease in the region.
Skin health: Hard water disrupts the skin's acid mantle — the slightly acidic protective layer that maintains barrier function and microbiome balance. A 2018 study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology demonstrated that hard water exposure increased skin sensitivity and impaired barrier function, potentially contributing to eczema and other dermatological conditions.
Mineral imbalance: While calcium and magnesium are essential minerals, their form in hard water (primarily calcium carbonate) is not efficiently absorbed. Paradoxically, very hard water can interfere with the absorption of other essential minerals like zinc and iron by competing for absorption pathways.
Cardiovascular considerations: Interestingly, some epidemiological data suggests a potentially protective effect of water magnesium on cardiovascular health. A 2016 meta-analysis in Medicine found that higher water magnesium was associated with lower cardiovascular mortality. The relationship is complex and likely depends on the specific mineral composition.
Water purification: Reverse osmosis (RO) systems effectively remove excess minerals but can strip water of beneficial minerals entirely. Modern systems with mineral cartridges or TDS controllers allow you to calibrate the mineral content to a healthy range.
Shower filters: Inexpensive carbon and KDF filters for showerheads can reduce the hardness of water contacting your skin and hair, providing cosmetic and dermatological benefits.
Hydration awareness: If you use aggressive RO filtration, consider supplementing magnesium (many Indians are deficient) and monitoring your mineral intake through diet and blood work.
Water quality is an often-overlooked component of health optimization. In a city like Hyderabad, where hard water is a near-universal reality, understanding its health impacts and implementing practical solutions is a simple but meaningful step toward better health.
